Chest CT (Simple Phase) (Preventive medical study)
Computed Tomography (CT) in the Thoracic Anatomical Region
Chest CT in Single and Contrast Phase: Cutting-Edge Technology at UniRad | Radiology Unit
Chest computed tomography (CT) is an advanced diagnostic imaging technique that uses X-rays to visualize the internal structures of the chest in great detail, including the lungs, chest wall, mediastinum, and large blood vessels. This imaging modality is essential for detecting, evaluating, and monitoring a variety of pathologies, from infections and lung diseases to neoplasia and cardiovascular disorders. At UniRad | Radiology Unit in Altabrisa, Mérida , we pride ourselves on being a leading imaging center in the region, offering both plain-phase and contrast-enhanced chest CT scans. With a focus on precision, humane treatment, and fast results, UniRad distinguishes itself as a reference radiology center.
What is a Chest CT Scan?
Chest CT uses a series of X-rays projected at different angles, which are processed by a computer to create cross-sectional images, or "slices," of the chest. These images provide a detailed view of the chest structures and can be performed in two main modalities:
Single Phase : Single phase CT is performed without the administration of contrast media and is commonly used to identify basic lung conditions such as pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and emphysema. This modality is useful for obtaining an overview of chest structures and detecting dense lesions without requiring additional contrast.
Contrast Phase : In the contrast phase, an intravenous contrast medium is administered to highlight blood vessels, mediastinum, and lung tissues, improving differentiation of structures and making critical information visible. This modality is essential for diagnosing complex pathologies, such as tumors and aneurysms, which may not be evident in the simple phase.
Clinical Applications of Chest CT
Chest CT is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of multiple clinical conditions. Its main applications include:
Lung Disease Assessment :
- In simple phase, CT is capable of detecting infections such as pneumonia, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) such as emphysema.
- In the contrast phase, it provides an additional level of detail that allows doctors to observe complex lung lesions, identify masses and detect invasion into neighboring structures, which is key in the diagnosis of lung cancer.
Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Diseases :
- Contrast-enhanced CT is essential in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. It allows clear visualization of the large vessels of the thorax, such as the aorta and pulmonary arteries, and is of particular relevance in the evaluation of aortic aneurysms, dissections and pulmonary embolisms, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate diagnosis.
Detection of Thoracic Tumors and Neoplasms :
- The contrast-enhanced phase allows for a thorough evaluation of masses and tumors in the mediastinum, lungs, and pleura. The contrast medium helps differentiate between normal and neoplastic tissues, providing details on tumor extent and characteristics, which is essential for treatment planning.
Mediastinal pathologies :
- The mediastinum, the region containing the heart, large vessels, esophagus and trachea, may present various pathologies such as lymphadenopathy, infections or mediastinal masses. A contrast-enhanced CT scan of the chest allows this region to be evaluated in great detail, facilitating the precise diagnosis of conditions that may be missed in other imaging studies.
Post-surgical follow-up and evaluation of oncological treatments :
- CT is a fundamental tool for monitoring cancer patients, allowing physicians to assess changes in the size or characteristics of lesions and monitor response to treatment. It is also used to ensure that there are no complications following surgical procedures in the chest.
